Carpet Bowls

Church Indoor Bowling Club (St. Philip’s)

The Club was founded by Rev. Kenneth Wakefield in 1978, to bring people together to enjoy the game of bowls during the winter.  It was the first indoor bowling club in Felixstowe, and was an instant success.  Membership had to be limited (to 72) at one time, such was its following.

From the start we have bowled on Fridays.  Until this year, our season was from the beginning of October to the end of April, but this year the keenness of the members has brought about an extension of play through the summer months as well.  Ken Wakefield would have been overjoyed.  From October to April we run 3 sessions of 2 hours between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and at present there is one session at 4 p.m. for the other months.

The club is affiliated to St. Mary’s Church, Walton.  We welcome new members, with or without experience or equipment.  Many of us became acquainted with the friendly world of bowls through St. Philip’s.  Many lasting friendships have been made through the club, which often comes up in conversation on other greens.
